Chapter 2

Overview

PC Donna De Freitas visits Coopers Chase to deliver a routine home-security talk, but Elizabeth and the other residents derail it with sharp questions, jokes, and political digressions. Donna is drawn into lunch with Elizabeth, Ron, Ibrahim, and Joyce, where their unusual chemistry becomes clear.

The chapter introduces Donna as an ambitious young police officer and formally reveals the residents' group as the Thursday Murder Club. This connection between Donna and the club matters because it brings an actual police officer into the orbit of the amateur sleuths.

Summary

PC Donna De Freitas, twenty-six and bored by the sleepy pace of Fairhaven Police Station, imagines a more dramatic police career involving guns, serial killers, and danger. Instead, she visits Coopers Chase Retirement Village to give her routine talk on home security, expecting window locks, ID cards, and practical reassurance for older residents.

The talk immediately goes off course when Elizabeth, an elegant woman in her eighties, objects to the standard advice. Other residents, including Ron and Ibrahim, join in with jokes, complaints, and political tangents, turning Donna's planned lecture into a lively free-for-all. Donna adjusts, and the session becomes unexpectedly enjoyable rather than routine.

Afterward, Elizabeth, Ron, Ibrahim, and Joyce invite Donna to lunch in the retirement village restaurant. Over salad and wine, they question Donna about policing, tease one another, and reveal distinct personalities: Elizabeth is sharp and commanding, Ron is blunt and irreverent, Ibrahim is precise and vain about his youthful appearance, and Joyce is quiet but observant.

Donna asks how the four residents became friends, but Elizabeth, Ron, and Ibrahim insist that friendship is not quite the right word for their association. Joyce corrects them gently, saying they are friends, and explains that the invitation should have made their identity clear: they are the Thursday Murder Club.

The revelation leaves Donna intrigued by the strange, energetic group and by Coopers Chase itself. As the restaurant fills and the pensioners continue drinking and chatting, Donna wonders what kind of place she has found herself in.
