Chapter 14

Overview

Elizabeth visits Penny and turns the murder of Tony Curran into the Thursday Murder Club’s first active line of inquiry, with Ian Ventham as the immediate suspect. Her theory links Ventham’s public argument with Tony to a possible financial motive and a preemptive killing.

The chapter also deepens Elizabeth’s bond with Penny, showing that she still treats her unresponsive friend as part of the club. John’s quiet bedside vigil underscores Penny’s importance and the emotional world surrounding the investigation.

Summary

Elizabeth visits Penny Gray at Willows after giving Ibrahim his instructions for the day. Speaking as if Penny can follow the investigation, Elizabeth frames the central question: who killed Tony Curran, and how can the Thursday Murder Club catch the killer?

Elizabeth focuses first on Ian Ventham because Ron saw Ventham arguing with Tony after the consultation meeting. Elizabeth reasons that the public meeting suggests one man had dangerous news or a grievance, and that Ventham may have feared Tony enough to confront him somewhere visible before later following him home.

Elizabeth lays out a possible motive and sequence: Ventham fails to calm Tony, goes to Tony’s house under the pretense of talking, and kills Tony before Tony can retaliate. Because Elizabeth knows Penny would ask why, Elizabeth decides to investigate Ventham and Tony’s financial relationship and plans to obtain Ventham’s financial records through a contact in Geneva.

Before leaving, Elizabeth promises Penny that a real murder is underway and that Penny will not miss it. The chapter then reveals John, Penny’s husband, sitting quietly nearby; Elizabeth recognizes his devotion and leaves him alone with Penny, aware that John spends every day at her bedside and speaks to Penny when Elizabeth is gone.
