Chapter 41
Overview
The Thursday Murder Club conducts a practical timing test to see whether Ian Ventham could have travelled to Tony Curran’s house in time for the murder. Ibrahim’s careful route calculations turn the group’s suspicion into a more precise logistical question, while Ron pushes for the simple answer the investigation needs.
The chapter matters because it narrows the case from motive and opportunity toward physical possibility, though Ibrahim’s conclusion is delayed.
Summary
Ibrahim, Elizabeth, Joyce, and Ron drive out to test whether Ian Ventham could have travelled to Tony Curran’s house in time for the murder. Ibrahim wants to reproduce the journey exactly by driving up to Tony’s gate, but Elizabeth stops him because it would be poor fieldcraft, so the group stops in a lay-by about 300 metres away.
Using the bonnet of the Daihatsu as a desk, Ibrahim presents his calculations to Joyce and Elizabeth while Ron is in the woods. Ibrahim says their journey took thirty-seven minutes at an average speed of about twenty-seven and a half miles per hour, with no traffic because of his careful route planning.
Elizabeth asks what the timing means for Ventham, and Ibrahim begins a detailed explanation despite Elizabeth preferring the simple version. Ibrahim outlines three possible routes Ventham might have taken, considering roadworks, route efficiency, and likely average speed, then explains that he has aggregated the routes and built in a margin of error.
Ron returns from the woods and cuts through Ibrahim’s elaborate presentation. Ron asks the essential question directly: whether Ventham could have reached Tony Curran’s house in time. The chapter ends before Ibrahim gives the final answer, leaving the timing test unresolved.
