Chapter 47
Overview
The residents’ sit-in becomes a cheerful but effective blockade, preventing Ian Ventham’s diggers from reaching the Garden of Eternal Rest. Ian underestimates the protest as a harmless pensioners’ gathering, revealing his arrogance while the residents quietly seize control of the situation.
Summary
By morning, the protest at the gate to the Garden of Eternal Rest has grown into a practical barricade. Twenty chairs, mostly sun loungers plus a dining chair for Miriam’s back, block the only route because trees hem in the gate on both sides.
The residents turn the obstruction into a relaxed communal event. Some pensioners nap in the sun while others set up picnic tables, ice-coolers and parasols, carry tea on padded trays, and swap photographs of grandchildren. As a result, the diggers cannot reach the graveyard for the time being.
Ian Ventham watches from his car and dismisses the scene as temporary. Karen Playfair stands outside vaping, while Ian assumes the residents will give up once the police arrive and hopes law enforcement comes soon to clear the way.
