Overview
Chris Hudson visits Coopers Chase to question Ron Ritchie, but Ibrahim controls the situation and turns Ron’s reluctance into leverage for involving Donna De Freitas. Ron’s trust in Donna pushes Chris closer to formally bringing her into the murder investigation.
The chapter also reveals that Jason Ritchie was with Ron and witnessed the argument between Ian and Tony, making Jason more important to the case than Chris previously knew. Chris leaves with a stronger lead and a reason to return with Donna.
Summary
DCI Chris Hudson drives to Coopers Chase to interview Ron Ritchie about the argument Ron witnessed before Tony Curran’s murder. Chris is surprised by the scale and comfort of the retirement village, which feels more like an idyllic community than the places he expected to visit in police work.
Chris reaches Ibrahim Arif’s flat, where Ibrahim has arranged for Ron to speak in a familiar, less stressful setting. Chris immediately notices that Ron, once the famous union firebrand “Red Ron,” now appears frail, confused, and vulnerable. Chris is also alert because Ron is the father of Jason Ritchie, a man already connected to Chris’s investigation.
Ibrahim carefully manages the interview, explaining that elderly people can be intimidated by police. Ron is nervous about getting into trouble and hesitates to tell Chris what he saw. Chris reassures Ron but decides not to mention Jason yet, hoping to keep Ron calm and let the conversation develop.
Ron says he would feel happier talking to “the lady,” which Ibrahim identifies as PC Donna De Freitas, a familiar officer who visits Coopers Chase. Chris admits Donna is not officially on the murder team, but under Ibrahim and Ron’s expectant pressure, Chris agrees that bringing Donna into the interview is a good idea.
Once reassured that Donna will be present, Ron says he will also talk to Jason because Jason was with him and saw the argument too. This gives Chris a significant new lead: Jason Ritchie may be a direct witness to Ian and Tony’s row. Chris agrees to return with Donna and speak to both Ron and Jason, saying he will do whatever helps get to the truth.
