Halloween

Overview

At lunch, August and Summer discuss Halloween costumes. August plans to be Boba Fett but realizes school rules forbid his blaster. Summer debates a unicorn costume despite peer pressure, then decides to be Goth at school and a unicorn for the parade. Their friendship deepens as Summer says she can tell August anything.

Summary

Over lunch, Summer asks August about his Halloween plans. August immediately says he will be Boba Fett, then learns school rules prohibit weapons, making the blaster impossible. They reminisce about lower school’s book-character rule, and Summer shares her love for The Wizard of Oz as a book.

August notes they rarely share classes, but they consistently eat together at the Summer Table. When August asks about Summer’s costume, she admits she wants to be a unicorn but worries it is too dorky, especially since Savanna’s group deems costumes childish.

August encourages Summer to ignore others’ opinions and do what she wants. Summer settles on a compromise: Goth girl at school to avoid drama, unicorn for the Halloween parade to enjoy the costume she really wants.

The conversation closes with light teasing and gratitude. Summer tells August she feels she can tell him anything, and August affirms the easy trust between them, underscoring their growing friendship.
