Why I Didn’t Sit with August the First Day of School
Overview
Jack confesses he avoided sitting with August on the first day to feel normal, while Summer chose to sit with August out of kindness. In the present, Jack updates August and Summer about Julian’s party turning classmates against him, omitting harsher details. August’s wry response reframes Jack’s isolation as August’s daily reality.
Summary
Jack recalls the first day of school, when the sight of August in the cafeteria shocked many students. Though Jack knew August would be alone, he chose not to sit with him, wanting a break to feel normal after spending the morning together in classes.
Jack purposely sat far away with Isaiah and Luca, bonding over baseball and later basketball, and they became his lunch group. He heard that Summer, who hadn’t been recruited by Mr. Tushman, chose to sit with August simply to be kind, which Jack recognized as brave.
In the present, Jack is now sitting with August and Summer. He fills them in on what Charlotte told him about the fallout: Julian’s holiday party helped turn the grade against Jack. Jack withholds the harsher parts—his supposed “snapping,” Julian’s mom’s comments about special needs, and the school board discussion.
Jack admits how strange it feels to be ignored and treated like he doesn’t exist. August answers with dry humor—“Welcome to my world!”—reminding Jack that the isolation Jack feels now mirrors what August has long endured.
