Extraordinary, but No One There to See
Overview
On opening night, Miranda realizes no close friends or family will see her perform. Spotting August with his parents, she abruptly bows out, claiming illness, and insists Olivia (Via) take the lead. Mr. Davenport scrambles, Via steps in, and Miranda’s quiet sacrifice restores a bridge without openly explaining why.
Summary
Miranda faces opening night with no support: her parents are unavailable, her boyfriend Zack has a game, and her friends choose the crowd. Despite knowing she will be great, she feels the sting of having no one there to witness it.
Peeking into the audience, Miranda spots August arriving with his parents, Isabel and Nate. The sight jolts her, reminding her of the Pullman family and what she’s lost. Backstage, as Mr. Davenport makes final adjustments and Justin paces, Miranda abruptly tells Davenport she can’t go on, lying that she’s ill.
Davenport, furious but pressed for time, orders Olivia (Via) to replace Miranda. Amid the scramble, Miranda strips off her costume and hands it to Via. The hair and makeup team rush to prepare Via, who worries she won’t remember Miranda’s lines. Miranda reassures her, though she cannot articulate her true motive.
With Davenport calling her to stage, Via leaves to perform the lead. Miranda’s self-effacing decision ensures Via’s moment, especially with August present, while the question of why Miranda acted this way remains unspoken and unresolved.
