Summary

Ms. Rubin announces the fifth-grade science-fair project, adding to Jack’s stress. As he reacts internally, a chain of memories clicks into place: Summer’s clue about “bleeding scream” connects with Jack’s recollection of a Bleeding Scream costume in homeroom on Halloween.
Jack suddenly realizes the costumed student was August, who must have overheard Jack talking with Julian. Recognizing he said hurtful things to impress others, Jack feels deep remorse and physical nausea, acknowledging the real reason for August’s withdrawal.
