Take Your Seats, Everyone
Overview
Auggie and Jack arrive at the graduation venue and join the fifth-grade staging area. Summer greets them, prompting Auggie to notice Jack’s crush. They preview the ceremony program, joke about speeches and awards, and line up alphabetically, with Jack correcting a seating mistake as the event is about to begin.
Summary
Auggie and Jack follow sixth graders into the auditorium and are directed by Mrs. G toward their staging areas. They head to the fifth-grade room beside the stage, where Ms. Rubin urges students to sit alphabetically.
Summer arrives in a pink dress, and Auggie compliments her. Jack’s matter-of-fact response makes Auggie realize Jack has a crush on Summer. The friends confirm plans to hang out at Auggie’s house after the ceremony.
The kids scan the printed program, joking about long speeches and which classmates might win awards. As Ms. Rubin presses for order, students take their assigned seats by last name.
Jack initially sits in the wrong row. After Ms. Rubin calls him out, Jack moves to the correct section, and the group settles in as the graduation ceremony is about to commence.
