Ex-Friends
Overview
Jack, baffled by Summer’s hint about “Bleeding Scream,” can’t understand why August has turned cold. He reciprocates the distance and explores other friendships, gaining social access but little satisfaction. The rift hardens, revealing peer pressures at school and Jack’s conflicted feelings, setting up a reckoning.
Summary
Jack wonders why August suddenly seems angry with him. After asking Summer for answers, he only gets the cryptic phrase “Bleeding Scream,” which means nothing to him. Convinced he did nothing wrong, Jack takes August’s cold shoulder as confirmation there’s a problem he can’t identify.
At school, Jack and August limit their interactions to necessary classwork exchanges while otherwise avoiding each other. Jack notes that few classmates engage with August beyond Summer, occasional time with Reid Kingsley, and a couple of Dungeons & Dragons games with the two Maxes. He remains unsure whether the “Plague” game persists.
Freed from always being with August, Jack finds more kids willing to include him and realizes he could join the popular group if he wants. However, the appeal wears thin: he doesn’t actually enjoy the popular crowd, and he admits he liked being with August.
Despite his misgivings, Jack stubbornly pins the situation on August, insisting the fallout isn’t his fault. The chapter ends with the friendship in a stalemate: Jack enjoys broader social options but quietly regrets the loss, still ignorant of the true cause behind August’s hurt.
