Aftermath

Overview

August returns from the retreat to a calm but concerned reception. The lost hearing aid isn’t found, though the camp promises reimbursement. Classmates treat August with new respect, and his mother and Mr. Tushman offer quiet support. The mood shifts from fear to solidarity after the previous night’s attack.

Summary

On the bus ride back, Mr. Tushman tells August that parents were informed of a “situation” but that everyone is fine. He explains the camp searched for August’s missing hearing aid during the morning swim but couldn’t find it, and Broarwood will reimburse the cost.

August wonders if Eddie took the hearing aids as a cruel souvenir. Arriving at school, August’s mom greets him with a tight, comforting hug, avoiding questions and giving him space. August accepts her help without protest.

As the duffel bags are unloaded, classmates who usually ignore August acknowledge him, nodding or patting his back. August collects his bag while his mom speaks with Mr. Tushman and Ms. Rubin. As they leave, Mr. Tushman gives August a brief, supportive hug without words, underscoring the community’s quiet solidarity after the ordeal.
