Day One

Overview

August begins the nature-retreat trip relieved that Julian stayed home, easing his anxiety. He bonds with friends in the cabin, enjoys a guided hike where his hearing aids help him notice wildlife, and embraces the rainy day’s games and a campfire night. The peaceful, star-filled ending marks a carefree, confidence-building start.

Summary

August rides to the nature reserve sitting with Jack, noticing that Julian is missing. Overhearing that Julian ditched the trip as “dorky,” August feels immediate relief, removing a major source of worry and allowing him to enjoy the experience.

At arrival, the boys sort into cabins. August wins the top bunk over Jack in rock–paper–scissors. Their cabinmates are Reid, Tristan, Pablo, and Nino. After lunch, the class heads out on a guided hike through true wilderness, not city park woods.

As the guide identifies trees, insects, and signs of wildlife, August realizes his hearing aids let him detect bird calls before others, boosting his confidence and engagement. Rain begins on the return, soaking everyone despite ponchos; back in the cabin they turn it into fun with a wet-sock fight.

With rain lingering, the group spends the afternoon in the rec room playing Ping-Pong and classic arcade games. Clearing skies allow a campfire dinner of hot dogs and s’mores. August, protected from mosquitoes thanks to repellent, revels in the campfire’s glow and the vast, starry sky, a rare sight at home. Tired and content, he falls asleep quickly, ending the first day on a peaceful note.
