Jack Will, Julian, and Charlotte
Overview
August meets three future classmates—Jack Will, Julian, and Charlotte—brought by Mr. Tushman to give him a tour. Anxious but reassured by Mr. Tushman and his mom, August agrees to go with them. The brief introductions set first impressions and foreshadow the dynamics he’ll face at Beecher Prep.
Summary
In Mr. Tushman’s office, August distracts himself by examining desk trinkets and student art while Mr. Tushman and Mom talk. Light jokes about names and a pumpkin-like portrait ease tension, revealing August’s nervous humor and Mr. Tushman’s friendly manner.
Hearing kids’ voices in the hall triggers August’s fear of older children’s judgments, a contrast to his earlier comfort with little kids. Mr. Tushman and Mom quietly reassure him as Mrs. Garcia announces the visitors.
Jack Will, Julian, and Charlotte enter, reserved and formal. Mr. Tushman introduces them as August’s future homeroom peers and outlines a tour plan: homeroom 301, science labs, computer room, library, performance space, cafeteria, and music room.
Brief greetings follow: Jack Will and Julian shake August’s hand with quick, awkward smiles; Charlotte waves warmly. When asked about instruments, August says no, while Mr. Tushman and Mom mention percussion and drums, highlighting August’s self-consciousness about his ears.
Despite reluctance, August sees his mother’s worry and nods agreement. The three students lead the way, and August follows them out, beginning his first real interaction with peers at Beecher Prep.
