Back from Winter Break
Overview
Returning from winter break, Jack Will discovers many boys are avoiding him, likely due to Julian’s influence. Though August and the girls remain friendly, Jack is socially isolated and abandoned at lunch. The ostracism raises the stakes of Jack’s alliance with August and signals a widening social conflict.
Summary
Jack Will returns to school expecting a fresh start, but immediately senses tension when Amos, Henry, and then Tristan avoid conversation. Jack interprets the cold shoulders as fallout from Julian, realizing a broader social campaign is underway.
Throughout the morning, most boys ignore Jack. In contrast, August speaks to Jack as usual, and the girls act normally. Both Maxes greet him, which makes Jack regret never having connected with them before.
Hoping lunch will be better, Jack sits with Luca and Isaiah, middle-tier athletes he assumes are neutral. They quietly relocate to a different table closer to Julian’s orbit, leaving Jack alone. Feeling watched and friendless, Jack decides to skip eating and go read in the library, accepting that he has been publicly ditched.
