Voices in the Dark
Overview
After escaping the seventh-graders, August, Jack, Amos, Miles, and Henry regroup in the dark cornfields. The boys trade adrenaline-fueled banter that cements their bond. August discovers he lost his hearing aids and breaks down, and the others comfort him, especially Amos, deepening their friendship and shifting group dynamics.
Summary
Breathless after sprinting from the confrontation, August, Jack, Amos, Miles, and Henry stop in the darkness and listen, realizing the seventh-graders are no longer chasing them. They trade quick accounts of the scuffle—Amos’s tackle, Miles and Henry’s help, and the size of their pursuers—while catching their breath and orienting themselves in the cornfields.
As the danger ebbs, gratitude surfaces. Jack thanks Amos, Miles, and Henry for coming back, and the boys exchange high-fives. Amos praises August for standing his ground, and Miles and Henry echo the respect. In the calmer light, they notice minor injuries: Amos’s bleeding lip, August’s ripped sweatshirt and scraped elbow.
When Jack spots that August’s hearing aids are missing, August realizes they were lost in the fight. The shock and loss overwhelm him; he cries openly, embarrassed. The others respond with steady reassurance. Amos puts an arm around August, then both arms, holding him like a protective older brother, while the group affirms his bravery and keeps him calm in the dark.
