Be Kind to Nature
Overview
At Broarwood’s Big Movie Night, organizers stress rules and respect for nature before announcing The Sound of Music. Mixed reactions erupt, including booing and a thrown soda can from another school, drawing Mr. Tushman’s attention. August, noting it’s Via’s favorite, bundles up, adjusts his hearing aids, and starts watching.
Summary
At the Broarwood Nature Reserve fairgrounds, a loudspeaker welcomes multiple schools and lays out rules: keep the grounds clean, stay within the orange cones, avoid the woods and cornfields, be quiet during the film, and regroup with schools afterward. The announcer reveals the feature is The Sound of Music.
August claps, remembering it is Via’s favorite movie, but students from other schools boo, hiss, and laugh at the choice. One student throws a soda can toward the screen, prompting Mr. Tushman to stand and look toward the disturbance, though the darkness hides the culprit.
With the stadium lights dimming and the film starting, August feels the chill, pulls on his yellow Montauk hoodie, and adjusts the volume on his hearing aids. As Maria appears on the mountain, August settles against his backpack to watch, while the crowd quiets for the movie.
