Detention

Overview

After punching Julian, Jack meets with Mr. Tushman and his mother. Jack refuses to explain, fearing wider fallout, and breaks down.

Instead of expulsion, Mr. Tushman suspends Jack for the week and offers a clean slate if Jack writes explanatory and apology letters, resetting stakes after winter break.

Summary

Jack Will sits in Mr. Tushman’s office after punching Julian, unable to explain his actions. Mr. Tushman stresses the seriousness of the violence, and Jack’s mom, torn between anger and surprise, presses Jack to say why he did it. Jack stays silent to avoid exposing that he once badmouthed August, and he breaks down crying.

Mr. Tushman outlines the consequences: automatic expulsion is possible, but instead Jack will stay home for the rest of the week before winter break. Mr. Tushman offers a path to avoid a permanent record if Jack writes him an explanatory letter and writes Julian an apology.

Jack agrees to leave, still unable to face the truth out loud. He thanks Mr. Tushman at his mother’s prompting and departs, carrying the weight of his choice and the secrecy behind it.
