Part One: August — Home
Overview
Back home after the school tour, August processes mixed emotions and recounts the visit to his mother. He reveals Julian’s rude question and Jack and Charlotte’s support. Shocked and apologetic, Mom says attendance is optional. August decides he still wants to go, signaling resolve despite anticipated challenges.
Summary
After leaving Beecher Prep, August asks to wait until they are home to discuss the visit. Once inside, he retreats to his room, feeling both sad and slightly happy, and is comforted by his dog, Daisy. Mom follows, unsure what’s wrong, and asks how it went.
August explains that the kids were “okay,” but clarifies that Julian, not Jack, was the least nice. When Mom mixes up names, August identifies Julian as the boy with dark hair brushed forward. He recounts Julian asking, “What’s the deal with your face? Were you in a fire or something?” and notes that Jack told Julian to shut up and Charlotte called Julian rude.
Mom is shocked and apologetic, pressing her forehead as if she has a headache. She tells August he doesn’t have to go to school if he doesn’t want to. Despite the hurt, August insists he wants to attend, confirming his decision without hesitation.
