Overview
August and Jack are cornered in the woods by older kids who taunt August and shove Jack. Eddie escalates the bullying with insults and a firecracker.
Amos, Miles, and Henry step in, triggering a brief fight and a chaotic chase. The confrontation cements unexpected alliances around August.
Summary
Leaving the woods to return to the movie, August and Jack run into six unfamiliar seventh-graders smelling of cigarettes and firecrackers. The group shines a flashlight in August’s face, recoils, and begins mocking him with movie-monster jokes. When Jack tries to lead August away, Eddie blocks them and keeps provoking.
Eddie switches the flashlight to Jack, calls August names, and one of the boys throws a firecracker at their feet. Jack shoves back after being pushed, but he’s knocked down. August steps in to de-escalate, refusing to leave Jack despite the threat.
Amos arrives with Miles and Henry and calmly orders the older boys to back off. Eddie mocks them, and as August and Jack try to cross to Amos, Eddie yanks August’s hood, slamming August onto his back and injuring his elbow. Amos immediately tackles Eddie, and the scene erupts into chaos.
In the confusion, someone grabs August and yells for him to run while others shout to chase them. August’s sweatshirt rips as he’s pulled through the dark. With footsteps close behind and voices shouting, the kids sprint blindly into the woods, the confrontation unresolved but the lines of loyalty newly drawn.
