Summary
In the middle of the night, August wakes and goes to his parents’ room, asking to sleep with Mom. He snuggles beside her and asks about her hand, which Daisy had nipped earlier. Overcome with emotion, August apologizes for hurtful words, and Mom gently tells him there’s nothing to forgive.
August asks if Via is ashamed of him, and Mom reassures him that Via is only adjusting to her new school. August apologizes for calling Mom a liar, and they exchange quiet I-love-yous, reinforcing their bond after the stress of Daisy’s death.
Curious and grieving, August asks if Daisy and Grans are in heaven and how people recognize each other there. Mom describes heaven as pure love where recognition doesn’t require eyes—“You just feel it inside you.” She kisses August and urges him to sleep.
While his parents sleep, August lies awake, imagining Via down the hall and Daisy in heaven. He wonders if Daisy dreams about him and reflects on the idea of reaching a place where his face won’t matter anymore, just as it never mattered to Daisy.
