Goodbye
Overview
Auggie and Via are pulled from their fight when Daisy suddenly becomes gravely ill. Mom rushes Daisy to the emergency vet, urging the children to say goodbye. Auggie resists but accepts the likelihood Daisy won’t return. The siblings are left grieving together, deepening family bonds amid loss.
Summary
Via bursts into Auggie’s room, telling August that Mom needs him because Daisy is very sick. Still upset from earlier arguments, August resists, but Via insists this isn’t about him. Seeing Via crying jolts August into following her to the kitchen.
In the kitchen, Daisy lies panting on the floor while Mom comforts her. Mom explains Daisy began whimpering and that a taxi is coming to take them to the animal hospital. August clings to hope the vet will fix Daisy, but Mom gently warns that Daisy is old and has been sick. She suggests it may be time to say goodbye to prevent suffering.
When the taxi arrives, August tries to block the door, pleading for Daisy to stay and asking for Dad. Mom says Dad will meet her at the hospital and repeats they don’t want Daisy to suffer. Via helps by opening the door and covering Daisy with a blanket as Mom carefully carries Daisy out.
At the stoop, Mom tearfully tells the kids to say goodbye. Via and August tell Daisy they love her; Mom waves and blows them a kiss before leaving in the taxi. After the car departs, Via hugs August tightly, and the siblings cry together, confronting the impending loss of their dog.
