The Shift
Overview
News of the overnight attack transforms August’s reputation at school. Jack, Amos, Miles, and Henry are credited with defending him, making August “one of the guys.” Amos’s popularity rises while Julian, having missed the incident, loses influence and remains the lone holdout in treating August poorly.
Summary
Returning to school, August immediately senses a seismic shift in how students see him. The story of the seventh-grade confrontation has spread across all grades, growing into a heroic tale in which Jack, Amos, Miles, and Henry fought back and led a daring escape. No matter the embellishments, everyone agrees August was targeted for his face and his friends defended him.
Because Amos, Henry, and Miles protected August, they begin treating him as part of their group. Even older jocks greet August as “little dude,” offering knuckle punches in the halls, signaling newfound acceptance and status.
The social order also changes: Amos becomes very popular, with Miles and Henry now gravitating to him. Julian, who missed the incident, is left out of the new narrative and loses influence. He continues to glare and avoid August and Jack, but he stands alone in his hostility—and August and Jack no longer care.
