Daisy’s Toys
Overview
After Daisy’s sudden collapse, August, Via, and Justin wait at home, recalling Daisy’s pain and Mom’s bite. Mom and Dad return with news that Daisy had a massive stomach tumor and was peacefully euthanized. The family privately grieves, with August witnessing Dad’s quiet tears and falling asleep imagining Daisy beside him.
Summary
Justin arrives to console August and Via as they sit before a pile of Daisy’s toys. Via explains Daisy suddenly began whimpering in pain, panted, collapsed, and even nipped Mom when Mom touched her stomach. Via admits Daisy had been sick for months and had seen the vet several times.
August realizes he hadn’t known the extent of Daisy’s illness. Via comforts August and apologizes for recent conflicts, which feel insignificant now. They wait in silence for their parents, focused on the toys that mark Daisy’s absence.
When Mom and Dad return without Daisy, they explain the vet found a large mass in Daisy’s stomach and breathing trouble. To prevent further suffering, Mom and Dad kissed Daisy goodbye while the vet administered an injection, and Daisy died peacefully in Dad’s arms.
Later, August sees Dad quietly crying alone, then finds Mom comforting Via. Choosing not to intrude, August puts himself to bed, removes his hearing aids, and falls asleep while imagining Daisy snuggling and licking his face, seeking solace in the memory of her affection.
