The Grand Tour
Overview
August begins his tour with Jack Will, Julian, and Charlotte, visiting homeroom 301 and the science lab. Julian’s condescension contrasts with Jack’s low-key support and Charlotte’s earnest explanations, heightening August’s anxiety. August clarifies basic school terms and Jack’s name, and the group continues toward the performance space.
Summary
August follows Jack Will, Julian, and Charlotte up to the third floor. Julian identifies room 301 as their homeroom with Ms. Petosa, disagreeing with Charlotte about the teacher’s strictness, then moves them along without inviting August to look inside.
At the science lab, Julian again controls the tour, insisting on his version of details and refusing eye contact with August. When Jack prompts a proper look, August enters; Julian steps aside quickly, as if avoiding contact. Julian mock-describes obvious items to August, prompting Charlotte to push back and note Mr. Tushman said August hasn’t attended school before.
Feeling nervous, August avoids eye contact and gives brief answers when Jack checks if he can talk and knows what an eraser is. Seeking clarity, August asks what “homeroom” means. Charlotte explains it as the morning attendance group, while Jack cuts short her over-explaining and keeps the tour moving.
Before leaving, August asks if Jack’s name is “Jack” or “Jack Will,” leading to Julian’s teasing and Jack’s simple explanation that Will is his last name. With that clarified, Charlotte steers the group to the performance space, promising August he will like it.
