Chapter 44
Overview
The council reels from Juice Box's use of a cosmic death-associated form, prompting Carl to suspect her warning is connected to Scolopendra's and to a threat larger than the dungeon. Donut keeps stalling, and her demand for a Princess Posse media channel leads Odette to reveal that the Blood Sultanate produced Blood Hunter.
That revelation causes Carl to realize the nagas' missing army is probably already dead, meaning the Sultanate is far weaker than it appears and Operation: Snake Pit has likely gone wrong. Donut then recognizes Blood Hunter's role in Miriam Dom's death and directs her fury toward Princess Vinata.
Summary
After Juice Box's terrifying transformation, Donut asks what the image was supposed to be. Odette and Tagg try to dismiss it as a changeling scare tactic and superstition, but Architect Houston explains that the figure is widely known as a personification of the Nothing, a possibly real trans-dimensional entity associated with death. Cascadia adds that the dungeon is banned from using the Unwashed as a mob.
Houston lists the creature's many names and says the Viceroys call it The Beautiful Place, noting that studying it is his life's work. Carl thinks about Juice Box's changeling nature and her dead brother's need to touch rare creatures to add them to his library. Because changelings can only become things they have touched, Carl is disturbed by the question of how Juice Box gained access to this form and why she knew it would frighten the council so effectively.
Carl connects Juice Box's warning to Scolopendra's warning and realizes both seem tied to a larger threat, one that may involve the entire universe rather than only the dungeon. Odette then moves to close the meeting after two attendants disappear, and Carl notices Cascadia is gone. Donut, still deliberately stalling for time, pivots into a demand that the Princess Posse be allowed to create its own media channel.
Donut's request gives Odette an opening. When Donut complains that even the snakes have their own television station, Odette reveals that the Blood Sultanate owns entertainment assets and fielded several dramas through Blood Hunter Holdings, including Blood Hunter. Carl immediately understands the significance: the nagas' missing troops are not hidden in their stronghold, but are likely already dead, meaning the Blood Sultanate is close to defeated and has been hiding its weakness.
Carl laughs uncontrollably as the others fail to understand his realization. He also concludes that Operation: Snake Pit is already compromised and hopes the people involved are safe. Donut finally connects Blood Hunter to the show whose vampire hunter killed Miriam Dom, turns on Princess Vinata, and makes clear that the naga princess has provoked the wrong enemies.
