Chapter 3
Overview
Donut’s loot boxes deliver major upgrades, especially the Tiara of a Thousand Lights, which can absorb magical hat buffs and become an exceptionally powerful custom item. Mordecai uses Quan’s Celestial cloak and a temporary Charisma-boosting potion to exploit the system, setting Donut’s Constitution on a path from almost nonexistent to extremely high.
The chapter significantly strengthens Donut for the coming Faction Wars by giving her better defenses, enhanced battlefield spells, and a way to consolidate equipment buffs. Mongo’s healing begins, and the group prepares to move from inventory management into Carl’s own rewards and recruitment.
Summary
Donut opens a long line of loot boxes, receiving large amounts of gold, trench-related scrolls, and several spellbooks. Mordecai identifies a real Shield spell, the war protection spell Sentry, and the ominous You’re Not Done Yet, which he says resembles Donut’s Second Chance but is more insidious.
Donut’s Celestial Benefactor box from Long Haul Biological Waste Management Solutions produces the Tiara of a Thousand Lights and its red charge pillow. The tiara can absorb magical hat buffs through the pillow and store up to 99 effects, making it potentially extremely powerful if Carl, Donut, and Mordecai carefully choose which hats to drain.
Donut then receives a second platinum benefactor box from the Apothecary, containing a purple universal charge pillow that can drain any magical item but only transfer buffs to like items. They begin charging Donut’s new tiara by placing her targeting boonie hat and her Tiara of the Inebriated Dragonfly on the pillows. Carl also applies a healing potion to Mongo by smashing the vial against the base of the dinosaur’s tail, safely triggering its healing effect.
Mordecai shifts attention to Quan’s Cloak of the Benevolent Champion, a Celestial item that raises the wearer’s lowest base stat to match the highest at first equip and boosts random spells and a skill over time. Because Donut’s Constitution is dangerously low, Carl and Mordecai decide she should learn Shield and equip the cloak immediately, rather than wait for more leveling or spell management.
Before Donut equips the cloak, Mordecai gives her a potion that temporarily tricks the system into reading her Charisma as 193, causing the cloak to begin raising her Constitution toward that inflated value. Donut equips the resized cloak and discovers Bad Attitude is immediately raised to level 15, while Wall of Fire, Heal Critter, and Puddle Jumper are the other spells being boosted. The group recognizes Donut has become far more durable and dangerous, then turns to Carl’s remaining loot boxes.
