Chapter 80

Overview

The attempted rescue at Fang’s shifting castle escalates into a chaotic battle against explosive robot dogs, forcing Carl to use Louis’s No Disassembles and accidentally trigger the castle’s destruction. The blast kills Fang, who was hidden inside Calliope, ending the Reavers as a faction and awarding their assets to the Princess Posse.

The victory immediately becomes more troubling when Juice Box reveals that Louis has been surgically altered with mechanical organs containing pieces of Epitome Tagg. Louis is rescued alive, but his body is now tied to a deeper enemy threat, changing the aftermath from triumph to containment and protection.

Summary

Carl, Donut, Tipid, Katia, Bautista, and the others hold the damaged entrance of Fang’s Reaver castle while Juice Box searches for Louis. Bautista sends stuffed animals through the shifting honeycomb corridors so Katia can map the pattern, and Tipid explains that the moving interior is likely a credential-based starship security system made dangerous by the bombing damage. Carl decides not to push toward the throne room until Louis is safe.

Florin reports that Kiwi has gone into active labor at Bucket Boy’s clinic and is asking for Mongo, creating a new emergency for Donut and Mongo. The group still waits because Juice Box has found Louis but mentions an unspecified complication. Carl positions Jamal near the central honeycomb passage to watch for threats while Samantha reports that the robot dogs are acting strangely and admits they are explosive hunter-seeker sentries.

The robot dogs flood out of the honeycomb corridors. Jamal burns several with his flamethrower, Donut’s upgraded Magic Missile evaporates others, and Elle freezes a huge dog carrying a mini tactical nuke. Carl risks himself to grab the frozen dog and pull it into inventory before it can detonate, then orders everyone to fall back as more explosive dogs appear.

Carl tells Juice Box to have Louis drop No Disassembles from his inventory to disable the robots. Louis teleports out and collapses near the transport, and Carl remotely detonates the No Disassembles after warning everyone to take cover. The pulse likely fries the sentries, but it also triggers one or more remaining bombs, blowing the Reaver castle apart and hurling the team across the battlefield. Most survive with injuries, though Jamal’s legs are badly damaged.

Calliope, the bleached drake, falls from the sky and explodes nearby. The system announces that Fang was hiding inside the dragon and has been killed by the chain of events involving Carl’s detonation, Louis, and Juice Box; the Reavers are defeated, and their assets go to the Princess Posse. Juice Box then reveals the complication: Louis had been surgically opened up, his heart and lungs replaced with mechanical organs containing biological pieces of Epitome Tagg, making Tagg present inside Louis. Imani prepares to wake Louis, but Juice Box insists he remain unconscious and safe for now, just before a scorched Samantha crashes down and asks where her new robot dog is.
