Chapter 39

Overview

Orren confronts Carl about the AI’s apparent escape from containment, but the immediate crisis shifts back to faction politics and battlefield survival. The disabled failsafe is already affecting the warlord map as alliances fracture and enemies reposition.

Back at base, Boomer reports heavy damage, weakened magical defenses, scattered crawlers, and a possible opening against the Operatic castle. Carl realizes it is time to begin the coded Operation: Snake Pit, the crucial move needed before Donut and Katia can be saved from the floor.

Summary

After the AI’s intervention, Orren asks Carl whether Carl deliberately helped break the AI out of containment. Carl refuses to answer, while Orren fears history will blame him for enabling a coming era of chaos. Orren urges Carl and Donut not to spread what happened, but messages have already returned, Donut is already narrating events to others, and the Syndicate council apparently witnessed the crisis.

Carl and Donut review the warlord updates. The Good Guys lose the former Prism castle to the Dream, while both the Bone Clan and the Dream leave the Bloc, reshaping the alliance map. Carl concludes that the rapid political movement means the truth about the disabled failsafe is already spreading, and he agrees with Florin’s caution not to chase fleeing enemies beyond Good Guys territory while their own side is wounded and disorganized.

Donut’s earlier private exchange with War Chief Stalwart reveals that she taunted him over King Rust’s death, Rosetta’s stolen fortune, and the lost royal property. Donut worries that Stalwart and the orc war mages may become dangerous once magical protections drop, especially because she has a powerful but frightening spell she has been told to keep secret. Carl reassures Donut that they can only fight one battle at a time and reminds her they are not alone.

Orren abruptly sends Carl and Donut back to base. There, Boomer briefs Carl on the battlefield: the southern front is quiet, Florin’s 101st is pushing enemies north, looting is underway, and the explosion that killed the slime boss appears to have come from a malfunctioning Weeper powerful enough to pierce anti-explosive defenses. Boomer also reports that the castle’s magical defenses are weakened after the brain worm attack because many mages were lost.

Boomer updates Carl on crawler affiliations and missing people. Most crawlers are now under the Princess Posse banner, though some remain hidden, unaffiliated, absorbed by the Madness, aligned with NPCs, or camped separately. Carl also remembers that King Rust’s body and magical items remain in Carl’s inventory, including another Ring of Divine Suffering and the necklace, which will require group decisions.

Boomer suggests that the enemy’s fragmentation creates an opening to move on the Operatic castle, a coded reference to Operation: Snake Pit. Carl recognizes that wiping out the nagas is essential if Donut and Katia are to escape the floor, but the operation must happen when the enemy least expects it. When Katia messages that Katia is almost back to base, Carl steels himself for the imminent raid and the danger of letting the naga queen escape.
