Chapter 49
Overview
Rosetta’s theory about Vinata’s escape is confirmed through the dungeon’s obscure worship-link mechanics and Edgar’s ability to detect Bijou fairy movement. The chapter narrows Vinata’s likely refuge to Khepri’s temple inside Club Vanquisher after Theia is ruled out because of Pacifist-linked sponsorship tied to Samantha and Carl. This revelation turns the next objective into a direct raid on Club Vanquisher to kill Vinata and her remaining court before they can hide safely through Faction Wars.
Summary
Carl’s note explains a dungeon mechanic that becomes central to Rosetta’s plan: when someone worships a god for the first time, a Bijou fairy creates an invisible light connection from the god to the strongest temple on the floor, then to the worshiper’s heart. This process takes about two minutes, and on most floors that strongest temple is inside Club Vanquisher. Edgar’s level-15 Sense Movement can detect the fairy’s upward movement, making him useful for confirming whether someone nearby has just begun worshiping a god.
Rosetta’s theory is now treated as correct: Vinata likely escaped the stronghold by using a light-god spell linked to Club Vanquisher. Several Ascendency light deities grant Travel the Path, a dangerous spell that lets a user become light and follow a path at immense speed. Some also grant Welcome Home, which lets a new adherent follow the Bijou-created worship link directly to the strongest temple.
The theory must explain why Vinata showed no public signs of worship and how Vinata’s entire court could have escaped if only one guard became an adherent. Rosetta’s answer is that one guard likely worshiped a qualifying deity and used a church recruitment quest to bring the others as temporary prospects. These prospects could enter the temple without fully joining the religion, creating a hidden refuge for Vinata during Faction Wars.
Carl reviews two possible gods. Theia would turn prospects into balls of light carried in the worshiper’s pocket, but Theia is sponsored this season by someone tied to the Pacifist network because of Theia’s connection to Samantha and Carl’s earlier survival. Since Theia is now effectively aligned against Vinata, Rosetta rules her out as Vinata’s chosen escape route.
That leaves Khepri, an obscure light god who is not available for sponsorship. Khepri’s female adherent can turn prospects into beetles, swallow them, and transport them to a temple built around a bug-covered endless buffet, where the prospects are restored. Carl concludes that Vinata and the guards will soon arrive in Khepri’s temple, so Carl, Katia, Prepotente, Samantha, and the others plan to break into Club Vanquisher, enter the temple, and kill everyone there.
