Dante
Overview
This chapter shifts to Dante, a former crawler, indentured NPC, and author of the Third Edition of the Dungeon Anarchist’s Cookbook. Dante and Justice Light are reassigned despite non-combatant status, revealing how the dungeon exploits NPC labor through contract loopholes. The final record confirms Dante’s fate: after being placed as an Ice Castle guard, Dante died by administrative action for refusing orders, deepening the Cookbook’s legacy of guilt, resistance, and sacrifice.
Summary
Dante, a crocodilian indentured NPC, rereads Damien’s newsletter and discusses it with his skyfowl neighbor, Justice Light. The newsletter announces that they are being reassigned for the next floor, alarming Justice Light because he fears an NPC replacement will ruin his carefully arranged shop and his fabric art.
Dante explains that the showrunners sometimes reassign workers when it is cheaper than creating new unavailable NPCs. Justice Light protests that both of them are marked as non-combatants, but Dante says they will be white-tagged snow castle guard captains in a settlement rather than mobs. Dante tries to reassure Justice Light, though Dante privately knows the promise of safety is not fully true.
Dante reflects on Justice Light’s past as a crawler and former owner of the Dungeon Anarchist’s Cookbook. Dante recognizes Justice Light through familiar choices and knows Justice Light was once a brilliant trap master who killed a shopkeeper, then chose indentureship as a shopkeeper out of guilt. Dante moved from the lockpicking guild to the trap master guild so Dante could be near Justice Light, whom Dante thinks of as a brother, but Dante has never revealed the connection.
Dante also reflects on Dante’s own guilt as a former Cookbook author. Dante only wrote a single entry and feels ashamed after seeing later owners pour themselves into the book. With the Reavers running the season and monitoring lax, Dante still cannot bring himself to speak openly to Justice Light.
As the eighth floor is about to open, Dante considers the cold mountain-and-gondola setup and the mantis crawlers expected to struggle there. Justice Light says Justice Light cannot and will not fight crawlers, and Dante admits refusal would bring consequences. A closing status record reveals Dante was the author of the Third Edition of the Dungeon Anarchist’s Cookbook and was later killed by administrative action while reassigned as an Ice Castle guard for refusing orders.
