Chapter 54

Overview

Carl turns Vinata’s ambush into catastrophe by using Black Nimbus potions, Günter, and a massive thermobaric bomb inside Khepri’s temple. The blast kills Vinata’s cousins and throws Carl and Vinata into Club Vanquisher, where divine chaos erupts and Vinata nearly kills Carl while maddened by the Eye of the Bedlam Bride.

Hellik unexpectedly intervenes, banishes Khepri, and reveals that Emberus may be wrong about Geyrun’s murder, pointing instead toward corruption involving Apito, Nekhebit, the All Tree, and Scolopendra. Vinata is ultimately killed not by Carl’s planned bomb, but by the sluggalo born from Carl’s neglected slugpox, saving Katia and Donut from her threat.

Summary

A note from Crawler Allister explains that immortality prevents death and bodily loss but not pain, spell effects, or lasting trauma if fatal wounds remain when it ends. This warning frames Carl’s next actions, because everyone in Khepri’s temple is about to act under temporary protections and extreme violence.

When the standoff ends, Vinata’s guards attack while Vinata, the two cousins, Katia, and Prepotente use potions. Katia and Prepotente drink Black Nimbus potions and are expelled from the temple despite the teleport restrictions. Carl summons Günter and drops a compact thermobaric bomb, The Waffle Maker, in the narrow temple to kill the guards, the cousins, and possibly Vinata while pushing Khepri back.

The explosion flattens and burns Carl so completely that only immortality keeps him alive. Carl heals himself and experiences agonizing bodily reconstruction. The blast kills the two cousins and likely the guards, but Khepri’s immortal insects survive, crushed and burning as they scream throughout the temple. Günter detonates farther down the endless hall, and Carl is blasted out of the temple into Club Vanquisher.

Outside the portal, Carl is disoriented by new buffs and debuffs caused by many gods entering the area and triggering the Scavenger’s Daughter patch. Carl realizes Vinata has been wrapped around him since the blast, crushing, stabbing, and slamming him while ranting that Carl ruined her chance to escape and killed her people. Because Vinata is staring into the Eye of the Bedlam Bride on Carl’s chest, Carl understands that the eye has driven her mad.

Khepri emerges from the portal with flaming insects, but a godly voice banishes him from the realm. The speaker is Hellik, Emberus’s brother and the god Carl was supposed to kill. Hellik calmly tells Carl that he did not kill Geyrun, says Emberus is wrong about him, warns that Apito has been corrupted, the All Tree is rotting, Nekhebit has returned, and Scolopendra is stirring, then marks Carl as a friend of his church and leaves.

Vinata continues trying to kill Carl as her immortality wanes, and Carl prepares to use another bomb if necessary. Before Carl can act, the sluggalo spawned from Carl’s untreated slugpox bursts from his back and kills Vinata with a hatchet to the forehead. Vinata’s body falls away, ending the immediate threat to Katia and Donut.
