Chapter 87
Overview
Carl’s group escapes the ninth floor as Emberus destroys it, carrying the emotional aftermath of Katia’s departure, Huanxin’s death, and Mordecai’s losses with them. Samantha’s strange memory of Kimaris hints at deeper manipulation, while Donut reaffirms that the dungeon will not break her.
After the survivors leave, Justice Light sacrifices himself by activating a hidden trap that frees the bijou and evicted demons and breaks the Nothing. The rupture drains into several major realms and awakens Scolopendra, radically escalating the danger for the dungeon and its powerful guests.
Summary
Samantha returns from Emberus badly burned but alive, explaining that Emberus tried to eat her before she used Carl’s instruction to get thrown into a volcano. The system warns that Emberus will destroy the ninth floor in three minutes, forcing the remaining crawlers to evacuate immediately.
Before leaving, Donut takes Katia’s Annie card, while Elle grabs a crude bra Katia left behind as a joke. Donut reflects uneasily that Mordecai’s mother’s ashes, used in the bolt that killed Huanxin, may have been contaminated by Donut’s earlier mistake. The team hurries toward the stairwell as the heat intensifies and the battlefield collapses around them.
Louis laments losing Party Planner, but Carl reminds Louis that airships will not be allowed on the next floor and that Florin has already stolen another plane. Samantha flirts with Louis and then becomes distracted when Bautista privately apologizes to Carl. Bautista admits he almost acted out of jealousy and grief, but insists he would never hurt Carl, then warns that Carl’s Kimaris figure may be dangerous because Kimaris can be summoned for the remainder of the floor.
Samantha recognizes Kimaris as an old friend and remembers that Kimaris once helped her conceive by giving her a potion, though the memory seems oddly blocked. Mordecai, devastated by the day’s losses but grateful for what was gained, thanks Donut for arranging Huanxin’s death. Donut tells Carl she will miss Katia, but declares that the dungeon’s cruelty will not break her, and Carl and Donut enter the stairwell as Larracos is abandoned.
After everyone leaves, Justice Light remains hidden on the doomed ninth floor. Justice lied to Juice Box about following her into the Nothing because Justice needed to stay behind and activate a trap known to Porthus and the Apothecary. Justice triggers a small legendary trap that drops both the bijou fairy trap and the demon trap into the permanent portal to the Nothing, freeing the bijou and the evicted demons.
Justice Light dies in Emberus’s fire as the trap succeeds. The system announces that the Nothing has been broken and is draining into the Halls of the Ascendency, Sheol, and Scolopendra’s Lair. Scolopendra stirs and then awakens, while guests at the Scolopendra Club are mockingly warned to flee through the dangerous seventeenth floor to reach the supposedly safe sixteenth floor.
