Chapter 48
Overview
Prepotente unexpectedly joins Carl’s army, preventing Carl from using coercion and revealing how lonely and emotionally unstable he has become. The team’s infiltration also scores a major success when Elle kills one of Vinata’s key succession targets, increasing pressure on the Sultana.
The chapter shifts the assault into its next phase: Rosetta’s prediction is confirmed when non-corporeal movement rises from below the castle, and Li Na moves into position at the clock tower. Carl’s side gains momentum, but the fragile emotions of Prepotente, Samantha, and the whole group threaten to destabilize the plan.
Summary
Prepotente arrives on Bianca, whose level and form have dramatically increased, and Prepotente himself is now level 99. Carl tells Prepotente they cannot speak unless Prepotente joins the army, and Prepotente unexpectedly agrees. Carl, who had been considering using a Potion of Conscription, puts it away and feels immediate relief at rejecting that path.
Carl makes Prepotente a colonel and tries to thank him for coming, but Prepotente abruptly hugs Carl and breaks down. Prepotente admits that Carl is his best friend, that he has been lonely, and that he wants to communicate better despite thinking Carl is foolish. The intense emotional moment ends with Prepotente screaming in Carl’s face, which startles Rend into screaming too.
Samantha, perched on Bianca, tries to provoke Prepotente until Katia restrains her. Katia warns Samantha not to say anything about killing Prepotente’s mother because Prepotente’s mother is already dead and the situation is too tense. Carl reinforces the warning, explaining that Samantha will be excluded if she destabilizes Prepotente, and Samantha reluctantly backs off while still resentful.
Elle reports over the comm that Carl’s prediction was right: the guards near the throne room worship Emberus. Elle’s group kills them, including a powerful naga. Katia receives a notification revealing that the naga was one of the four succession targets, and Carl identifies him as the Sultana’s real-life boyfriend, hoping the death will make Vinata emotionally unstable.
As the group waits for the next stage, Edgar detects non-corporeal movement rising from below the castle. This confirms Rosetta’s plan is working. Carl signals Li Na, who begins climbing the clock tower, while Rosetta tells Carl the next step is now his responsibility.
