Chapter 5

Overview

Carl formally inherits Ren’s regenerated tummy acher, bonds with it, and names it Sir Rendlegore after a chaotic argument about whether the creature is a replacement for Garret, Donut, or Mongo. The naming gives Ren’s final request a lasting place in the group while adding a powerful but unstable new pet to Carl’s responsibilities.

The chapter also shifts the faction-war preparations from theory into organization: Donut assigns officer ranks, Florin steps naturally into command, scouts and headquarters plans begin, and the group identifies urgent priorities including recruitment, upgrades, Juice Box, enemy reconnaissance, and destroying the naga team. Carl’s botched hair restoration provides comic fallout but also marks the team’s move from recovery into mobilization.

Summary

Carl reveals the level-one tummy acher he inherited from Ren, prompting Donut to panic that Carl is replacing Donut and Mongo. When Carl summons the tiny creature, Mongo almost eats it, then swallows it after the tummy acher willingly jumps into Mongo’s mouth. Mongo vomits the creature back up unharmed, revealing the baby’s regenerative, durable nature and chaotic temperament.

Carl examines the tummy acher and learns it is an unbonded pet that has died five times, gaining significant stat buffs and five unknown weaknesses. Because Ren asked Carl to look after it, Carl feels obligated to keep it. Donut objects, arguing that the pet is unstable and should not be treated as a replacement Garret, but the creature bonds with Carl after eating Carl’s unwanted chowder-style breakfast sandwich.

Katia, Louis, Bautista, and Samantha arrive while Carl’s group debates what to name the new pet. Samantha talks about sensing her child in the dwarven castle’s water and threatens revenge on Tish because of Ghazi’s old betrayal, though Louis refuses to help blow anyone up. Katia begins using Rev Up hair tonic to restore Carl’s missing eyebrows and eyelashes, while Donut recounts Ren’s sacrifice and complains that Carl accepts every burden placed on him.

The group debates names until Louis proposes Sir Rendlegore, a name that honors Ren without making the creature a copy of Garret. Carl accepts the name immediately and officially names the tummy acher Sir Rendlegore. Katia then attempts to restore Carl’s head hair with Splash Zone’s help, but Splash Zone cannot cast the needed water spell in the saferoom because it counts as offensive magic.

Because the tonic remains on Carl’s head too long, Carl’s hair grows into long, shiny waves down to his waist and keeps regrowing when cut. Mordecai explains that Carl must either keep it tied back or return for frequent trims until the effect wears off in about two weeks. Meanwhile, Donut and the others formalize their army hierarchy: Florin becomes a general, key allies receive officer ranks, strippers are assigned command roles over troops, and plans begin for headquarters setup, scouting, recruiting, upgrades, vehicles, Juice Box contact, and the priority of destroying the naga team.

As the chapter closes, Katia works on an automaton-table project for Tran and starts larger vehicle plans. Britney helps Carl tie back his new hair, Sir Rendlegore sleeps at Carl’s feet, and Carl turns to Louis, whose special rank is Army Air General, to inspect Louis’s newly acquired “toy.”
