Autumn — Ten

Autumn meets with her prenatal doctor, who reviews the chart, reminds her to provide a urine sample to screen for preeclampsia, and confirms the upcoming anatomy (organ) scan scheduled for two weeks out. Autumn, cold and anxious to dress, has no immediate questions.

In the restroom, Autumn recalls Dr. Singh’s idea that love is action and reframes the awkward effort to urinate as care for herself and the baby. She manages to provide the sample and briefly chats with a nurse, who reassures her about the scan.

At reception, Autumn learns her mother has handled the appointment logistics and copay. In the car, Autumn notices fluttering she cannot distinguish from digestion and fixates on the concept of an “organ scan,” imagining possible abnormalities and outcomes.

This thought spiral widens into the reality that all lives end, including her baby’s someday. When Autumn admits worry, her mother gently agrees it will probably be fine but, remembering Finn’s death and Angelina’s long-held belief he would outlive her, refuses false certainty. Together, they accept uncertainty and the risk that “lightning can strike twice,” while Autumn recommits to loving through action.
