The Wedding Night — Chapter 53
Overview
In the storm-dark aftermath of the blackout, the ushers discover Jules’s mangled gold crown and a single jeweled shoe on the ground. Realizing no one saw Jules after the lights returned, they fear she is missing or harmed. The finds suggest violence and escalate the urgency of the search.
Summary
In the howling storm, the ushers cluster around a twisted gold crown Femi has found on the black earth. After a stunned pause they recognize it as Jules’s wedding crown and silently picture the force required to deform it. The discovery immediately reframes their unease as fear for the bride.
Angus recalls Jules’s expression before the cake cutting—anger or fear—and Femi presses whether anyone saw Jules once the lights came back on. Their attempts to remember yield only silence, and dread spreads as they confront the possibility that something has happened to her.
As they scan the darkness, Angus spots another object and, with shaking hand, lifts a pale gray silk court shoe with a jeweled buckle. The single shoe, paired with the ruined crown, convinces the ushers that Jules may be missing or hurt, and their search takes on urgent, fearful purpose.
