Hannah — Chapter 12
Overview
On the eve of the wedding, Hannah is swept up by Will’s charisma and unsettled by Jules and Charlie’s flirtatious nostalgia. The ushers’ laddish cruelty culminates in humiliating Hannah with a “penny” drink. Tensions around Will’s school ties surface, and a terrifying face appears at the window, jolting Hannah and darkening the celebratory mood.
Summary
Hannah readies herself in the grand room, buoyed by wine and the freedom of a child-free weekend. At drinks, she gravitates toward Will, who flatters her and draws her into conversation, heightening her confidence and a guilty thrill of attraction.
Hannah meets the ushers and Georgina, sensing an undercurrent of mockery beneath their charm. Jules and Charlie recount their teenage sailing history with flirtatious ease, unsettling Hannah and skirting the question of whether they ever slept together, which remains conspicuously unanswered.
Conversation shifts to Will’s school days with Johnno and the ushers, framed as “boys will be boys.” When Charlie inadvertently references someone from Edinburgh, Hannah hurriedly diverts attention by quizzing Will about his TV show, exposing her secret fandom and Charlie’s insecurity.
The group “pennies” Hannah’s brimming champagne, pressuring her to down it. She complies, humiliated, realizing she’s become the butt of their private game while Charlie offers only a strained, apologetic look.
Turning away, Hannah sees a grotesque face pressed to the dark window, silently mouthing “BOO.” Shocked, she drops her glass, the moment puncturing the party’s glow and hinting at menace beyond the celebrations.
