The Wedding Night — Chapter 59

Overview

The ushers find Will’s corpse on the bog’s edge, his body already being claimed by the peat. Shock fractures the group as they confirm the groom is dead. While they fixate on Will, an unidentified figure steps from the darkness, escalating the tension and hinting at immediate confrontation and revelation.

Summary

In the aftermath of the island’s chaos, the ushers venture toward a body lying near the bog, beyond the firmer track. The peat seems to absorb the corpse, a reminder of the bog’s history of swallowing the dead. As their lights sweep across the scene, they see splayed legs, a head thrown back, lifeless eyes, and a bloodstain at the sternum.

Femi identifies the victim: it is Will, the groom. The men are stunned; for the first time, Will’s beauty is gone, replaced by a grotesque mask of agony. Angus retches, and the usually stoic Duncan sobs before shaking Will’s body in denial, creating a ghastly imitation of life. Angus stops him, and the group stares, forced to accept the reality.

As Femi, Angus, and Duncan remain fixated on Will’s corpse, their guard drops. In the darkness only a few feet away, a second, very-much-alive figure steps toward them, unnoticed. The emergence of this figure raises immediate danger and the prospect of answers—or further violence—just as the ushers confront their friend’s death.
