Johnno — Chapter 62
Overview
Johnno, reeling from drugs and guilt, wanders the stormy grounds haunted by the Loner’s death and his complicity with Will. He regrets not killing Will earlier and tries to reach the marquee. The chapter ends with the power failing, escalating the sense of peril and converging plot threads.
Summary
Johnno roams the dark, gale-lashed island, disoriented and lashing out at shapes in the wind. He is fixated on the Loner’s face—thick glasses, the look from their school dorm—reliving the hours before the fatal hazing that he and Will orchestrated and covered up.
Revealing he took drugs freely dispensed by Peter Ramsay, Johnno’s thoughts spiral. He seethes at Will’s effortless charm and composure after the speeches, contrasting it with his own ruined life, and confesses he should have finished Will in the cave when he had the chance.
Guided by flickering sounds and shifting sightlines, Johnno tries to reach the marquee, its light seeming to recede and advance in his altered state. As the wind thrashes the canvas and music blares, the power suddenly fails, plunging everything into darkness.
