Olivia — Chapter 27
Overview
On the wedding morning, Olivia spirals with anxiety, haunted by past blood and a fresh stain on her dress. She resolves to confide in Hannah but retreats after witnessing Hannah and Charlie arguing and being confronted by Will. Olivia’s isolation deepens, reinforcing her guilt as guests approach the island.
Summary
Earlier on the wedding day, Olivia sits half-dressed, fixated on a faint bloodstain on her bridesmaid dress from a self-inflicted cut. The mark triggers memories of significant blood months before, intensifying her panic and claustrophobia about facing guests and the ceremony.
Seeking relief, Olivia recalls feeling safer after talking with Hannah in the cave and decides to tell Hannah “the rest,” hoping confession will ease her spiraling anxiety. She dresses and sneaks through the corridors to avoid others, determined to speak before losing her nerve.
At Hannah’s door, Olivia overhears an argument and sees Charlie in his boxers, bristling with anger. Caught off guard by their intimacy and conflict, Olivia freezes, unwilling to interrupt or expose herself in that moment.
Will appears behind Olivia, half-dressed, questions why she is there, and unsettles her further. Startled and ashamed, Olivia flees back to her room, convinced she has missed her chance to speak and fearing she is the source of looming trouble.
Watching the boats draw near, Olivia internalizes blame for “what I’ve done,” feeling trapped and certain the approaching celebration will magnify her dread and secrecy.
