Jules — Chapter 14
Overview
On the eve of the wedding, Jules’s father finally arrives, and Will meets him under palpable tension. A strained family dinner follows, with Hannah kind, Olivia withdrawn, and Araminta delivering a self-congratulatory toast that angers Jules. Jules counters with a gracious speech about the island and fate, though the anonymous warning unsettles her.
Summary
The evening before the wedding, Jules’s father, Ronan, arrives late with his young wife, Séverine, startling Hannah as he makes a showy entrance. Jules observes Ronan and Will subtly sizing each other up, sensing Ronan’s skepticism toward Will’s polished charm and celebrity status.
Aoife ushers everyone to dinner, where she and Freddy present the meal. The group includes Jules’s parents seated far apart, Séverine clinging to Ronan, Hannah being gracious, and Olivia withdrawn. Conversation stays polite but edged: Jules notes Hannah’s kindness, Charlie’s watchfulness of Will, and her own complicated feelings.
Tension sharpens when Araminta engages Ronan about his twins via Séverine, then rises to give an impromptu toast. Her speech frames Jules’s determination as mere “style” and frames the wedding’s remoteness as Jules’s “madness,” culminating in Araminta praising herself for raising an “independent” daughter, which infuriates Jules.
Jules resists an outburst and responds with a controlled toast thanking guests, praising the island as perfect for Will and her Irish roots, and celebrating how quickly she and Will connected. Will playfully recalls pursuing their first date, and Jules momentarily basks in their connection before the memory of the anonymous warning note intrudes, souring the moment.
