The Wedding Night — Chapter 39

Overview

Freddy urges the search party to return, reporting the Gardaí have been called after the injured waitress says she may have seen another person outside. The ushers debate safety, contemplate the possibility of murder, and realize Pete has disappeared. Fear escalates as they decide not to split up further.

Summary

In the dark and storm, Freddy rushes to the searching ushers and tells them to return to the marquee. He explains the Gardaí have been called because the injured waitress has come around enough to say she may have seen someone else outside.

After Freddy leaves, Angus argues they should wait for the police, warning it is unsafe to continue. Femi and Duncan push back, doubting the police will arrive quickly in the weather and insisting they have come too far to turn back.

As they weigh the waitress’s uncertain sighting, Angus voices the implication: if there was someone else, it may not have been an accident—possibly murder. The men grip their torches as potential weapons, bracing for danger.

Angus suddenly realizes Pete is missing. They call out for him without reply. Despite unease, Duncan insists they should not wander off to find Pete, claiming Pete has handled such states before. The group, fearful yet reluctant to fracture further, accepts this and holds position.
