Hannah — Chapter 8
Overview
Hannah and Charlie arrive seasick and shaken, meeting Jules, Will, Jules’s mother, and a strikingly grown Olivia. Will’s easy competence and charm unsettle Charlie, while Jules’s tactile affection for Will highlights Hannah’s own marital strain. The party heads to the Folly and ruined chapel, amid mocking laughter from above, underscoring frictions.
Summary
Hannah, drenched and seasick as their boat reaches the island’s inlet, clings to Charlie and worries about facing Jules in this state. She and Charlie note the stark beauty of the white beaches, cliffs, and the Folly where they will stay, and share a brief, tender acknowledgment of a difficult month and their need for adult time together.
As they near the jetty, Hannah spots Jules, Will, and two dark-haired women—Jules’s mother and Olivia. Olivia’s transformation from a teenager who once had a crush on Charlie to a striking young woman unsettles Charlie. Mattie prepares to dock, but Will intervenes with confident ease, catching the rope and helping Hannah ashore, his charisma immediately apparent and provoking Charlie’s quiet resentment.
Will greets Charlie with a hug that Charlie stiffly rebuffs, then Jules embraces Charlie warmly, signaling their deep history. The group heads toward the Folly while Will explains its origins and Jules points out the roofless chapel where the ceremony will be held. The stark, romantic ruin impresses Hannah but also feels haunted and macabre.
Walking behind them, Hannah observes Jules’s constant, intimate touches on Will and compares their evident passion to her and Charlie’s exhausted, post-children intimacy. She worries about her changed body and the distance in their marriage, and suppresses suspicions about Jules and Charlie’s old bond.
As they approach the building, mocking laughter from men on the battlements makes Hannah self-conscious about her bedraggled state, reinforcing a sense of social scrutiny and reigniting old insecurities just as the wedding festivities begin.
