Johnno — Chapter 45

Overview

Johnno confronts Will in the cave, revealing their school hazing of a younger boy who drowned after they tied him at the base of a cliff. Will denies responsibility and pushes for silence, citing consequences and his father’s influence in the cover-up. Johnno resolves to tell the truth, but the wedding planner interrupts and frees Will, leaving the confession hanging.

Summary

In the cave, Johnno confronts Will about their past. Johnno insists a boy’s death was their fault, while Will urges him to forget it. Flashing back, Johnno recalls how a younger pupil, “Loner,” found stolen GCSE papers in their dorm, threatening Will’s spotless reputation.

That night, Will declared they would play “Survival.” Johnno and Will gagged and blindfolded Loner, carried him to the cliff path, and, at Will’s direction, tied him to the handrail at the base using bootlaces. They left him there, assuming he would free himself.

The next morning, Johnno realized the tide would have risen. Will demanded silence and crafted a story: nothing had happened and they’d been in bed. Loner’s body was later found; the death was ruled a tragic accident, helped by Will’s father and friendly authorities. A brief accusation from another pupil went nowhere.

Back in the present, Johnno presses Will: did Will know the tide would come in? Will refuses to admit fault, belittles the victim, and accuses Johnno of drunken fantasizing. Johnno, consumed by years of guilt, vows to tell everyone the truth despite the fallout.

The wedding planner arrives, professionally noting Jules wants Will back for the reception. Under her supervision, Johnno unties Will. The confrontation ends without resolution, but Johnno’s threat to expose the past now hangs over the celebration.
