Hannah — Chapter 37
Overview
Hannah seeks out Olivia in the Folly and confronts her apparent distress. To reach Olivia, Hannah reveals her sister Alice’s experience of revenge porn and subsequent suicide, urging Olivia to speak up. Charlie’s call to the wedding breakfast interrupts, but a fragile trust is established that may shift what Olivia reveals next.
Summary
As guests head to the marquee, Hannah walks to the Folly to check on Olivia despite Jules’s warning to back off. She finds Olivia in her room, shaken and evasive after nearly drowning. Hannah senses Olivia was trying to disappear rather than draw attention.
To reach Olivia, Hannah recounts her sister Alice’s story: a brilliant first-year student who fell for a popular boyfriend, tried to end it, and was punished when he uploaded a sexual video of her. Alice kept the humiliation secret from family as it spread online.
Hannah explains how the shame destroyed Alice’s ambitions and mental health. Two months after leaving university, Alice died by suicide from an overdose. Hannah uses this to urge Olivia to confide rather than carry her burden alone.
Olivia listens, quietly acknowledging the parallels, as Charlie’s announcement calls guests to the wedding breakfast. The conversation is cut short, but Hannah’s disclosure creates a tentative bond and a path for Olivia to open up.
