The Wedding Night — Chapter 49
Overview
In the darkness after the chaos, the ushers search the island, unnerved and short one man: Pete is missing. Navigating by landmarks and fear, they skirt the graveyard and cliffs. They discover a twisted gold crown, hinting at violence and signaling that the celebration has literally and symbolically been shattered.
Summary
In the blackout and storm, the ushers move together through the island night, jittery and on edge. They call to each other for reassurance as they stumble over heather and uneven ground, acutely aware that Pete is missing and that someone else may be out there watching.
Femi’s flashlight sweeps over looming shapes that resolve into Celtic crosses and crumbling stones: the graveyard. The sight spooks them further, and they retreat, trying to reorient while the crash of surf grows nearer, the ground vibrating with each impact.
Determining they are too close to the sea, they adjust course. A glint on the ground halts them; they brace for something grisly, but the lights reveal metal. Femi retrieves the object and holds it up: a gold crown, twisted and broken—an ominous sign that the wedding night has curdled into something ruinous, while Pete remains unaccounted for.
