Johnno — Chapter 19

Overview

Alone in his room, Johnno smokes and drinks, triggering paranoia and memories of Trevellyan’s. He senses a figure in the dark, apologizes to it, and vomits from fear. The episode signals deep guilt over a long-buried school secret, raising stakes around what he and Will may be hiding.

Summary

Johnno retreats to his room after finishing a joint he bought in Dublin, hoping the weed will help him sleep. The island’s cliffs and relentless waves evoke Trevellyan’s school, reviving memories he has avoided for years and a “secret” the surf once urged him to keep.

Despite drinking and smoking, Johnno cannot settle. He feels insects crawling on his skin and the darkness pressing down, fueling mounting panic. He decides to shower but then senses a shape gathering in the corner, a presence he tries to dismiss as weed- and whiskey-fueled paranoia.

The sense of a person persists. With his eyes closed, Johnno still “sees” a face and recognizes who it is in his mind. He whispers at the presence to leave, then shifts to apology—“I’m sorry. It wasn’t my fault. I didn’t think.” Overwhelmed, he rushes to the bathroom and vomits, shaking with fear.

The encounter leaves Johnno exposed by terror and remorse, strongly implying a buried incident from school that he has long suppressed, now forced to the surface by the island, the company gathered, and the wedding’s tensions.
