Aoife — Chapter 46
Overview
Aoife observes the reception descending into hedonism as guests move from champagne to drugs and hard liquor. She discovers a married couple secretly having sex in the bride and groom’s room and chooses not to expose them. Her reflections underline the wedding’s hidden transgressions and the looming, uncontrollable fallout.
Summary
Aoife, the wedding planner, notes the reception shifting into a wilder phase as guests abandon restraint, drain the champagne, and crowd the dance floor. In the Folly’s toilets she finds white powder scattered by the sink, confirming that some guests are using drugs.
Earlier, investigating a noise upstairs in the otherwise closed-off Folly, Aoife entered the bridal suite and found a man and woman having hurried sex. Both wore wedding bands, and she recognizes from the seating plan that their spouses are elsewhere in the marquee.
The couple panic briefly but relax when they realize Aoife will not expose them. Aoife later sees them return to separate corners of the party, presenting innocence to their partners and friends.
Reflecting on what she observes—sniffles at noses, the illicit tryst, and the gossip she has overheard, including the best man’s cave remarks—Aoife considers how weddings invite secrets. She can orchestrate a flawless event only if guests respect boundaries, but when they do not, the consequences extend beyond the day and cannot be contained.
