Jules — Chapter 4
Overview
On the eve of the wedding, Jules exerts tight control over plans but is rattled by an anonymous note urging her not to marry Will. A near-tryst with Will is interrupted by best man Johnno, who’s forgotten his suit, exposing dysfunction among Will’s friends. Will’s unease about producer Piers’s invitation and Jules’s doubts about Will’s past with Johnno hint at hidden tensions that may threaten the wedding.
Summary
Jules, the bride, surveys the Folly’s grandeur and the perfect weather while trying on her expensive wedding dress. Despite her confidence and meticulous planning, she is unsettled by an anonymous note received three weeks earlier telling her not to marry Will.
She finalizes the seating plan for their select in-house guests, reflecting on limited female friendships, her reliance on control, and her closest friend Charlie arriving with Hannah. Jules invited Piers, Will’s producer, after meeting Piers’s wife, considering it an obvious inclusion.
Will enters, sees Jules in her dress, and initiates sex despite superstition. Their heightened attraction underscores Jules’s desire to possess Will and her willingness to cede control, including allowing intimate filming since their engagement.
Johnno, Will’s best man, barges in and catches them, then confesses he forgot his suit back in England. Jules contains her anger, judging Johnno as irresponsible and ill-suited to Will’s polished image.
Will’s faint irritation at Piers’s late invitation and Jules’s observation of his ambition contrast with his indulgence of Johnno. Jules suspects Will keeps Johnno around because of a complicated shared past, feeding her unease alongside the warning note.
